Why Do You Have a Website?

Have you ever asked yourself why your company has a website? I've spoken with lots of companies who have never really asked themselves this question. Sometimes, I suspect, they have a website just to "keep up with the Joneses" without really defining what goals they have in mind. I recently spoke with a cosmetic dentist in London, Ontario, who intended to invest a large amount of money in a "Flash" website design which, I'm sure, will be really well done and quite impressive. The problem is that, as a Flash site, it cannot be effectively optimized for the search engines; he's probably the only one looking at it. And I have to ask, "If you just want something pretty to look at, why don't you buy a piece of art and hang it on the wall?"

The point is, unless you have clearly-defined goals for your website, you can spend alot of money and achieve no tangible or worthwhile business goal.
